Ask The Dead are loud, determined, and not at liberty to divulge certain information.
The Lean, released in 2013 on DIY punk/hardcore label Riotous Outburst Records (CT), is the second EP for the Providence post-hardcore band. A raw, 4-song creation that is sixty gracious seconds under the thirteen minute mark features aggressive tracks comprised of post-grunge influence, mixed with classic rock notes and a hint of deceiving indie intros.
“We're proud of The Leans,” states singer/ guitarist Alan Hague. “It was the first group of songs we all contributed to during the writing process and it's where we first started to find our sound.”
Two and a half months into the new year, Ask The Dead already have a significant 2014 tour schedule on the books, a sold out test pressing of their 7”, and made some movie magic.
“Basically, a production company came to Providence to shoot a movie called 'Some Freaks’,” explains Hague. “I'm not at liberty to divulge much of the plot before the film's release, so to make a long story short, they wanted a Providence band to play a 'warehouse show' in the movie, my best friend was working for the production and told the director about us. He liked what he heard, and picked us to be in the movie.” Easy peasy. As newly dubbed cinematic musicians, the band called on the Providence music scene for extras.
“The best thing about the crowd in the film was that it was mostly people who actually come to our shows.” The movie has a tentative release date of late 2014 / early 2015.
On the topic of the Boston vs. Providence scene, Hague humbly muses the size is the most obvious difference. “In terms of the music itself, I think Providence might be artsier in part because it's a smaller city. It allows for that creative side to stand out a little more and become a recognizable feature. It's a big part of why I love living here.”
That said, Ask The Dead continues to enjoy big city life, playing Boston frequently and supporting local bands such as friends, Zip-Tie Handcuffs. Ready for a live set?
