Notorious for staging their lyrical content in contextual allegories, Boston indie band The Okay Win introduce Nothing’s Not Moving with the thoughtful and metaphor-ridden track “Shift”. “Every record up until this point has always started with a loud punch, and this was definitely a change of pace,” states singer Stephen MacDonald. Originally thought to be added as a secret track on the record, “Shift”, which was inspired by a movie quote, "As long as you're facing forward, it's the right direction,” was promoted after the band realized the song encapsulated the overlying message of the album. “That felt like the proper note to start the record on.”
Among a catalog that has very few tracks that could be categorized as love songs, “Legion (When Coming Home)” is a deconstructed love letter and “one of the more straight forward pieces on this new record.”
"The Hook", despite being 3 minutes and 46 seconds long, is actually the shortest track, featuring the most limited lyrical content. “That song was specifically written to be the opposite of how we usually approach lyrics,” MacDonald confesses. A reaction to a performance of “Pumped Up Kicks” inappropriately close to the timing of the Newtown, CT school shooting left the singer realizing how often lyrics are overlooked. “[The Hook] attempts to say something by not really saying anything at all, while also commenting on the fact that people are often just looking for something catchy to dance along to. Pop music is fun, but if you really listen to what some people are saying in music, it seems pointless or insane.”
Despite the two year intermission, The Okay Win doesn't stray from the trademark in-the-moment narrations and infinite buildups with Nothing's Not Moving. They may be another year older, but the band continues to be humble about their music. “There's no real scientific process to it, and I'd be lying if I said we know what we're doing.”
