Singer / songwriter gruff with an orchestral country twang, The Okay Win’s 2016 ‘Cannon Mouth’ continues the contemplative and powerful vibe synonymous with the band, however, the EP almost didn’t happen.
The Okay Win's ‘Cannon Mouth’, recorded at the Converse Rubber Tracks studio and released January of this year features somber vocals depicting a casual walk through the numb neutral, ear ringing aftermath of your Armageddon, but according to frontman Stephan MacDonald, the EP wasn’t necessarily planned. “Prior to [‘Cannon Mouth’] we really had no plans to do any sort of recording. I was still pretty burnt out from our previous album,” MacDonald tells Bishop & Rook. “But when Converse got in touch and invited us in, I immediately said yes. I wasn't sure what we would end up recording because, due to our schedules, it had become very rare for all five of us to be in the same room writing and we didn't have a ton of stuff ready.”
The band instead focused on reworking older songs. “Over the previous year we had been playing some more stripped down shows. It was fun to play things in a new way, so we thought it'd be cool to record a couple of those versions. "Give Em' Hell" is actually on my solo record, ‘Building Hands’, from back in 2008, and "Cliff" is from our EP ‘Leveled’. Personally, I prefer the version of “Cliff” on this EP,” MacDonald confessions. “It might just be because it's the newer recording, but I always love songs that build. I think the lyrics can get a bit lost in the first version, but [the alternative] allows for them to come through a bit more and hopefully someone is able to take something away from that.”
Title track "Cannon Mouth" and "I'm A Parade", two new songs, round out the EP.
